Electromagnetic Induction: An Alternative for Teaching and Understanding

  • Hermann Haertel University Kiel

Abstract

As an alternative to classical physics on the topic "Electromagnetic Induction" based on Faradays Law and Lorentz Force, an approach is presented, based on Wilhelm Weber´s Fundamental Force Law of Electrodynamics. This paper discusses the topics: mutual induction, self-induction, parallel and anti-parallel currents, currents in the same and opposite direction. Even though both approaches lead to the same quantitative results in physics, the difficulties in understanding are quite different. These problems are discussed in this paper including some consequences for teaching and classroom activities.
